Employment Training
Other Ranks (Technical)
On completion of Recruit training you will be posted to HMAS Stirling in WA to undertake an Enhanced Selection Process (ESP) Course for one week.
The ESP is a two way process in which:
- Personnel can make an informed decision as to their suitability for submarine service; and
- The member’s suitability for submarine service will be assessed.
Once you have been assessed as suitable at the ESP you will return to HMAS Cerberus for the following MT category training.
Course: Marine Technician Initial Technical Training (ITT)
Location: Engineering Faculty, HMAS CERBERUS, Crib Point, Victoria.
Duration: 26 weeks
Note: Prior to commencing employment training, the level of maths ability is assessed to determine whether remedial maths training is required.
To provide the MTSM with the appropriate level of training, all MTSM sailors are provided with common technical operator training. Successful completion of the Marine Technician Operator Training will result in the awarding of ‘Certificate III in Transport and Distribution'. This qualification meets the requirement of the appropriate Industry Training and Advisory Board ( ITAB ) Training Package and is a nationally recognised qualification.
MTSM trainees will complete Auxiliary Machinery Operator acquaint modules in various systems to prepare them for their first sea posting. Modules comprise:
- Steering Gear Systems;
- Stabiliser Systems;
- Ships Diesel Generators;
- Electrical Switchboards;
- Air Compressors;
- Desalination Plants ( Evaporators and reverse Osmosis);
- Sewage Treatment Plants;
- Air Conditioning Systems;
- Refrigeration Systems;
- Pumping Systems; and
- Ships Motor Boats.
All MTSM trainees will consolidate their ITT by completing a 24 hour Right of Passage within HMAS CERBERUS (Simulation of watchkeeping and maintenance duties in an engineering environment at sea).
Further Navy specific training will be conducted to prepare Sailors for their first deployment to sea which will include, Damage Control and Fire Fighting (containing elements of electrical damage control) and Survival at Sea.
At the end of category training instead of joining the surface fleet directly you will be posted to the Submarine Training and Systems Centre to undertake your submarine specialisation training.
Initial Collins Class Course (ICCC)

Designed to give the student the requisite knowledge to undertake their job as part of the submarine technical and tactical departments.
The course covers all mechanical and electrical systems onboard the Collins Class Submarine including:
- Diesel and Power Generation Systems;
- Power Conversion and Distribution (submarine specific);
- Weapons Hydraulics and Discharge Systems;
- Internal and External Hydraulic Systems; and
- Auxiliary systems including:

Following the completion of the minimum initial period of service, sailors may be provided with the opportunity to complete Technical Trade Training. To provide the MTSM with the appropriate level of training, all MTSM sailors selected for Trade Training are provided with common technical apprenticeship training.
Successful completion of the Marine Technician Apprenticeship will result in the awarding of ‘Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade’. This qualification meets the requirement of the appropriate Industry Training and Advisory Board ( ITAB ) Training Package and is a nationally recognised qualification.
