Specialist Investigative training can be undertaken, which enables an individual to investigate more complex and serious offences, whilst providing career enhancement training and proficiencies:
The Service Police Investigator's Course (SPIC) comprises of:
- Conducting a Minor Criminal Investigation (MCI);
- Understanding Criminal law;
- Preparing an Investigation Plan;
- The use of criminal intelligence information in an investigation;
- The requirements and presentation of warrants;
- The procedures used when investigating cases involving youth or members of minority groups;
- Preparing and submitting forensic documentation;
- Describing conversational management techniques;
- Planning an interview;
- Conducting an Interview;
- The management of criminal property in an interview situation;
- Processing recorded information after an interview;
- Compiling an investigation report;
- Presenting evidence;
- Performing Investigative Techniques;
- The procedures for conducting an identification parade;
- The use of photography in recording evidence at the scene of an incident and the production of a Photo Supplement and Sketch;
- Obtaining a basic ink fingerprint sample from a person;
- Investigating Minor Offences; and
- Conducting an investigation for offences involving damage, dishonesty and assault.
The Australian Defence Force Investigator's Course (ADFIC) covers:
- Define the underpinning principles and role of a Service Police Investigator;
- Describe the principles of Criminal Liability;
- Describe the procedure for the management of informants;
- Assist the prosecuting authority throughout the judicial process;
- Describe the principles of surveillance;
- Brief on evidence for serious offences;
- Employ Investigative Techniques;
- Conduct a fraud/forgery investigation;
- Conduct a Narcotics investigation;
- Conduct a Serious Assault investigation;
- Conduct a Sexual Assault/Indecency investigation;
- Conduct a Homicide/Manslaughter investigation;
- Conduct an Arson investigation;
- Conduct a Burglary/Robbery Investigation; and
- Employ Investigative Equipment.
Senior Sailors Advanced Staff Skills Course:
NR personnel are also able to complete further courses which will enable them to become competitive for career advancement. This includes the Senior Sailors Advanced Staff Skills Course which enhances an individual’s competence in effective writing and knowledge. Subjects of this course are:
- Parts of speech;
- Sentence construction;
- Characteristics and conventions of grammar;
- Punctuation of staff work;
- Paragraph construction;
- Characteristics and conventions of service writing;
- Minute, report and letter writing;
- Introduction to logical argument; and
- Introduction to service papers.
