Navy pilots fly rotary wing aircraft. They are critical to the Navy capability and operate either from the Navy's Air Station at HMAS ALBATROSS, Nowra NSW or embarked in a variety of ships at sea.
The Navy's front-line line warfare helicopter is the Seahawk which is equipped to extend the combat radius of the ships from which they operate by detecting and locating surface or submarine targets and coordinating its electronics systems with those of their ship to guide weapons accurately to their targets. The Seahawk is an integral part of the ship's weapons and sensor system. In addition, the Seahawk is the forerunner of an increased number of highly capable helicopters planned to enter service in the near future. These state of the art new generation, advanced naval helicopters will be employed in the maritime environment. They will be equipped with torpedoes, anti ship missiles and dipping sonar.
The Sea King helicopter is employed in the utility, SAR and limited surface surveillance role and regularly embarks in air capable ships. The Sea King helicopter is due to be replaced by the MRH 90 in December 2011. The MRH 90 is a state of the art helicopter which will be employed in troop support roles and special operations in both land and maritime environments.
The Aerospatiale Squirrel AS350B helicopter is employed in light utility and training tasks.
Aircraft that you will have the opportunity to fly include:
- Sikorsky S-70B-2 Seahawk helicopter (Crew: 1 Pilot, 1 Observer, 1 Aircrewman);
- MRH 90 helicopter (Crew: 2 Pilots, 2 Aircrewman);
- New generation of advanced Naval combat helicopters (Crew: 1 Pilot, 1 Observer, 1 Aircrewman); and
- Aerospatiale Squirrel AS350B helicopter (Crew: 1 Observer, 1 Pilot).
As a Navy pilot you will experience a variety of employment and training environments during your Naval career. These are designed to prepare you for the role of higher management as a senior officer in the Royal Australian Navy.
