Employment Training
Officer
Immediately following completion of the New Entry Officer Course, Seaman Officer Midshipman undertake the Junior Warfare Application Course which is conducted in 4 Phases.
Phase 1 (nine weeks) is conducted at HMAS CRESWELL and Phase 2 (22 weeks) is completed at sea.
Course Details:
Junior Warfare Application Course (JWAC)
Phase 1
Phase 1 is conducted at HMAS CRESWELL and is aimed at teaching the basics of seaman officer's employment such as Officer of the Watch duties and Relative Velocity and includes a one week sea training period. Trainees are required to live-in for the duration of the training.
Phase 2
A 22 week period at sea consolidating specialist training previously covered in Phase 1. Provides an overview of all departments and sub-specialist areas and consolidation of training in the duties of Divisional Officers and Officer of the Day. Trainees will generally live onboard during this phase.
Phase 3
Comprises a 14 week shore phase conducted at HMAS WATSON concentrating on more advanced theoretical and practical navigation, bridge management and mariner skills including a four week period of training in the Bridge Simulator. This is followed by a six month sea posting to a Minor War Vessel (Patrol Boat, Mine Hunter etc) for award of Harbour Watchkeeping Certificate (HWC) and preparation for the Fleet Board (three weeks of written and oral examinations) and award of the Navigation Watchkeeping Certificate (NWC).
Phase 4
A 16 week shore phase conducted at HMAS WATSON comprising of six weeks of warfare theory training and four weeks of practical training in the bridge simulator . This is followed by a minimum of a six month sea posting to a Major Fleet Unit for the award of a Bridge Warfare Certificate (BWC) . Following award of a BWC officers can expect to consolidate their skills at sea for another 18 months as an OOW prior to commencing specialist training.
Note 1: A BWC is a prerequisite for promotion to LEUT for SMN Officers.
Note 2: Some mental agility is required to be a seaman officer, particularly once officers commence practical training both in the Bridge Simulator and at Sea . This includes a requirement for good mathematical and numeracy skills. It is suggested that, as a minimum, prospective candidates undertake two unit mathematics (or equivalent).
Australian Defence Force Academy
Immediately following completion of the New Entry Officer Course, Seaman Officer Midshipman undertake Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the Junior Warfare Application Course. Phases 3 and 4 are conducted after successful completion of degree studies at the Defence Academy.

Midshipman Seaman Officers then proceed to the Academy to commence their degree studies. This is at the beginning of their second year in the Navy.
