Opportunities for Training Systems (TS) Officers are mainly in the ‘train the trainer’ field. There are limited opportunities to undertake traditional teaching or instruction. The prime function of a TS officer is to oversee trainers, develop, manage and co-ordinate a wide range of training, delivery systems and provide training systems expertise on all aspects of the Defence Training Model.

Training Systems (TS) officers provide qualified, professional trainers to support Navy's large, diverse and complex adult education and vocational training mission. The principle function of TS officers is the management of the training system, undertaking Training Development and Quality Control. TS officers do not have a significant instructional role. As 'training specialists' TS officers can expect to be employed in four broad areas:
- Management of training and assessment systems;
- Development of training and assessment systems;
- Consultancy on education and training; and
- Quality assurance of training and assessment.
Junior TS officers will be involved in such tasks as:
- identifying individual competency needs to meet Navy's operational capability requirements;
- designing and developing training and workplace assessment; and
- evaluating training and workplace assessment processes.
TS officers will have limited opportunities to undertake traditional teaching or instruction. Opportunities that do exist in this area are primarily in the 'train-the-trainer' field.
As they progress, TS officers can expect to be more involved in the co-ordination and management of Navy's training effort. This will frequently involve training provided under contract by civilian training organisations.
TS officers have the opportunity to undertake sea service. This may take the form of a posting to the training department of one of the Navy's larger ships, or as a deployment to a ship to complete a specific task.
