If you're into sport, you've come to the right place. Sport promotes teamwork and fitness, so not surprisingly it plays a big role in Navy life. Physical activity is included in a typical day's work so essentially you're being paid to keep fit!

Gym Equipment Navy warships are equiped with state-of-the-art gym equipment

Ship shape

All Navy warships are equipped with state-of-the-art gym equipment, which will usually include a weights room, cardio room with the latest treadmills and bikes and even a large TV playing video music clips. Physical training instructors are on board to help you design your own fitness program. And group fitness classes are certainly a different experience when you're on the flight deck of a frigate, with no visible land in any direction.

Some ships can even cater for games like deck hockey and seated volleyball. You can even bring your surfboard or mountain bike to use when the ship is in port.

Fun on base

On base you'll probably be residing at one of our many shore establishments, built and run in many aspects to replicate the conditions of a ship. Most offer a well stocked bar, use of the Aquatic Centre, Reading Room, Cinema, Cable TV (Foxtel) and Gymnasium. You are able to bring civilian guests 'on board' for a meal or to enjoy a BBQ or any of the latest gaming equipment. When you're on base, working for the Navy is just like a regular job; once you've finished for the day you can take off and enjoy yourself. Or if you want to stick around, there are always plenty of opportunities to socialise on base. It's a great place to meet up with your mates and relax over a drink.

Fun at sea

It's not all work and no play out at sea. The Wardroom, Junior Sailor's Café and Senior Sailor's Café give everyone onboard access to great recreational facilities. It's here that you can have your meals, relax and have a chat with your workmates, read the newspaper or magazines, or just take a solo coffee break. The latest DVD releases are played in both rooms, usually twice a day. Ask any officer or sailor what they like about the Navy and they're bound to say the mateship. You'll go through a lot with your fellow members. You'll eat, sleep, work, train and socialise right alongside them. So it's no wonder you make strong friendships. In fact, the friends you make in the Navy will be your mates for life.

Time out

Everyone needs their own space and you'll find that your fellow Navy members, particularly when you are out at sea, will be very respectful of this. People will be able to tell when you need some time alone and they will happily leave you to it.

Dragon Boat racing

This is an ideal sport for the Navy as it develops strength, flexibility and great endurance. Each paddler's contribution is essential so it highlights the importance of teamwork. You are pushed to your limits and constantly surprised by the results. Represent your Service and your country at the highest sporting levels on the world stage. The RAN Dragon Boat Team has competed in places like New Zealand, Malaysia, Hong Kong and China. In fact they set a world record in the 1300 metre title at the 1998 Championships in Gui Lin, China.

Nordic skiing

Nordic or cross-country (XC) skiing is basically travelling up and down hills under your own steam, without the aid of ski lifts or T-bars. There are no lift queues, no crowds, just the tranquillity of the backcountry, a superb workout and an amazing sense of achievement. And anyone can do it. Every year our instructors teach people who have never even seen snow to XC ski!
