Cyclops

Water Jet Disruptor

The disruptor is a tool used to disable an explosive device without detonating or exploding it. It uses a shot of water to pierce thin walled items, such as packages, bags or briefcases, to destroy any circuitry before detonation occurs. It can be placed in position by hand, or brought in by the remote-controlled Cyclops robot.

Water Disruptor

Explosive Ordnance Disposal

A core role of Navy Clearance Divers is to perform the role of EOD and IEDD in or around coastal areas. This highly specialised area uses many dedicated techniques and tools to render safe both military munitions and improvised (home made) bombs.

It is dangerous, but you do get trained really well, and that gives you the confidence to do what you need to do.
Explosive Ordinance Disposal

Equipment for explosive work

The equipment used in explosive ordnance disposal allows divers to deal with potentially dangerous devices, often without the need for direct physical contact. Included in the range is a ceramic plated armour suit, a water jet disruptor and a robotic vehicle, Cyclops, which allows objects to be detonated from a distance.

Armour

Armour

The specially designed suit worn by the EOD operator is made from a variety of protective materials that provide safety from explosive devices. It has ceramic plates across the torso to protect the body from the full force of a blast. The helmet has its own air filter to prevent inhalation of heated air from an explosion and also has a communications system built in to keep radio contact with other team members.

Remote Positioning Vehicle (RPV)

The RPV 'Cyclops' allows divers to remotely attack and defeat an explosive device or booby trap, meaning they can achieve detonation without any direct physical contact. The Cyclops can place a real-time X-Ray and deliver a suite of weapons used to defeat improvised explosive devices. It can be used in ship borne activities where it can travel along passageways and over hatches and with four cameras attached, can send real-time information back to operators. This crucial information allows them to make well informed tactical decisions. Cyclops also has audio and a speaker so in the case of a person equipped with a bomb on their body, operators can talk to that person through Cyclops, allowing them to stay at a safe distance and keeping all personnel out of harms way.

Portable X-ray machine

Portable X-Ray

The portable X-Ray device can be placed in front of a suspicious object to take an x-ray image that shows what may be inside, without anyone having to handle the object in question. With this valuable information, decisions can easily be made about what step to take next.

Remote Activating Kit

Remote Activating Kit

This comprehensive kit allows the operator to disable, move out of harms way or detonate a suspect or explosive device from a safe location. With a varied array of ropes, pulleys and gadgets, a small object could be rigged to be dragged around corners, over logs, rocks or trees or even up flights of stairs, while keeping everyone at a safe distance.
