Australian Clearance Divers are the Australian Defence Forces' specialist divers. The primary focus of Clearance Divers is to locate, identify and perform Underwater Explosive Ordnance and Improvised Explosive Device Disposal (Underwater EOD and IEDD), which is the rendering safe and disposal of any underwater explosives. This role is conducted in the vulnerable approaches to ports and anchorages, potential beach landing sites, in the open ocean and in and around port facilities.
In the present international climate of uncertainty and widespread threat of terrorism, Clearance Divers represent a flexible and extremely valuable capability. All personnel joining the Branch, including officers, must undergo acceptance testing and complete the challenging requirements of the Clearance Diving qualification course. The demands placed on potential applicants are probably not seen anywhere else in the ADF outside of the Special Forces.
In this role, Clearance Divers focus on the location, identification, rendering safe and disposal of underwater munitions and explosives, in areas where conventional mine hunting methods are not possible. In this role, Clearance Divers install, maintain and repair ships' underwater fittings and Naval Harbour installations. Diving on air equipment (both self contained and surface supplied), these divers are skilled in various underwater salvage techniques. Learn More
This element conducts Advance Force Operations. They are responsible for a variety of tasks ahead of a potential landing force and, as the name suggests, tasks are conducted in a clandestine manner, most often in enemy territory and without backup. Learn More
A core role of Navy Clearance Divers is to perform the role of EOD and IEDD in or around coastal areas. This highly specialised area uses many dedicated techniques and tools to render safe both military munitions and improvised (home made) bombs. Learn More
