How do I stand if I have committed an offence years ago?
Defence does take into consideration the criminal history of an applicant when assessing his/her suitability; this is done on a case-by-case basis. Some offences fall under the 'spent conviction legislation' with which the ADF must comply.
How old do you have to be to join up, or what is the maximum age?
The age limits for entry varies from 17 - 55 years. Specific age requirements are available on each job information page. As evidence of proof of age, all persons wishing to join the ADF must present an original or certified copy of their full birth certificate to their recruiting officer.
I’m not old enough to apply, how do I plan for my career in the Navy, Army or Air Force?
We suggest that you contact Defence Force Recruiting by calling 13 19 01. They will be able to put you in touch with a Defence Recruiter to discuss your career options and plan your education path. Please visit our Underage Candidates page for information on age requirements and features available to you to explore your career options.
I'm 17 years old. Can I join the ADF?
Yes. The ADF observes a minimum voluntary recruitment age of 17 years. Some exceptions may be considered for certain applicants. This age exception is subject to approval by the relevant authority within Navy, Army or Air Force. The recruitment of all minors must be voluntary, and all minors must have the written consent of a parent or guardian. In accordance with Australia's international obligations, the ADF will take all possible measures to ensure that minors do not participate in hostilities. As evidence of proof of age, all persons wishing to join the ADF must present an original or certified copy of their full birth certificate to their recruiting officer.
What are the minimum eligibility requirements to join the Navy, Army or Air Force?
To join the ADF you must:
- be an Australian citizen or a permanent resident eligible for Australian citizenship;
- be aged from 17 - 55 years (specific age requirements are available on each job information page);
- Pass specific medical and physical standards; and
- Meet the minimum educational standards for your chosen job.
What does Economic Age Limit mean?
The ADF has a set of specific entry age guidelines. These have been developed in response to employer Occupational Health and Safety duty of care responsibilities. There is a risk of injury during initial Military Training and evidence indicates the level of risk increases with age. The entry age guidelines also contribute to the ADF obtaining an economic return on the cost of its training investment, which must be recouped before members reach their compulsory retirement age (CRA) of 55.
