Your Opportunities Unlimited (YOU) Session

After you’ve submitted your initial application to join the ADF, the next step in the process is to attend a YOU Session at a Defence Force Recruiting Centre.

Complete the forms before the YOU Session

Prior to the YOU Session you should receive a pack which includes the YOU Session Confirmation Letter and Supporting Documents.
It’s important to read and complete the relevant forms before the session and bring them with you on the day.

If you are under 18 years of age, it’s especially important to have the Consent to test form signed by a parent or guardian, otherwise you won’t be able to participate in the YOU Session.

What you need to bring

MINIMUM REQUIREMENT FOR YOU SESSION

  • Photo ID
  • Consent to Test Form

What you should bring

  • Original birth certificate
  • Education results
  • Employment history / Trade qualifications
  • Proof of citizenship or permanent residency
  • Supporting documentation relating to medical conditions

All of this information will help us to determine your job options, so the more you have with you on the day the better. If you can’t bring all of the requested documents to the YOU Session, at the very least start organising them.

Notify DFR if you cannot attend

At any stage during the application process, it’s important to let DFR know if you can't attend a session before the day. This way, you will usually have the option to re-schedule.

If you don’t attend your scheduled session without prior notice a Failure To Report will be recorded against your profile.

Preparing for the YOU Session

While you’re waiting to attend a YOU Session you should:

On the day of the YOU Session, you will be taken through an Aptitude Evaluation, a Medical Interview with a nurse and an interview with a Careers Counsellor:

The Aptitude Evaluation

The Aptitude Evaluation consists of a general ability or reasoning test, and mathematical ability test. The results of this evaluation will help to determine which position(s) in the ADF you're most likely to be suited to.

For some examples of the types of questions you might be asked on the day, take a look at the Guide to Aptitude Testing for Joining The ADF.

Medical Interview with a nurse

The Medical Interview with a nurse will include a colour perception eye-test. If there are any significant issues with your eye sight or colour perception, there will be some positions that you are unable to apply for.

There are height restrictions which apply to certain positions in the ADF so your height will be measured. Your weight may also be recorded to determine your Body Mass Index, or BMI. Your BMI is a number which indicates whether you fall within a healthy, weight-for-height range.

The ADF BMI standard for recruits generally falls within 18.5 to 33; however standards for some jobs may differ.

Launch the BMI Calculator to work out your own BMI.

Interview with a Careers Counsellor (CC)

During the interview with the Careers Counsellor you’ll be asked questions about your education, fitness level and sporting history and any relevant leadership experience that you may have had. The CC will also ask you some questions to determine your motivations or why you’re interested in a career in the ADF.

Towards the end of this session the CC will present you with a Job Opportunity Report. This lists all of the jobs you may be eligible to apply for, based on your aptitude test results. You will still need to meet a job’s eligibility requirements, which will be discussed on the day.

Depending on your suitability and level of interest, you may be invited to undertake further evaluation at a later date, for some of these positions.
