Frequently Asked Questions

Overseas Applicants

Can I have my service with another defence force recognised for superannuation purposes?

Yes! There is provision within the MSB Scheme for recognition of full time service exceeding 12 months with another foreign defence force to be included in aggregated service for the calculation of the member benefit, subject to that service being accepted by the MSBS Board of Trustees. Potential enlistees who may have qualifying service should write to the Commonwealth Superannuation Administration (ComSuper) PO Box 22, Belconnen ACT 2616 and seek a determination regarding the eligibility of their service.

Can I transfer from an overseas country into the ADF?

The opportunity to request for transfer to the ADF from another Defence Force does exist, but applicants must satisfy normal immigration requirements. (Enquirer's should use the Contact a Recruiter form on this website).

Do I have to be an Australian Citizen?

For full time or part time entry, citizenship requirements will be satisfied if you are an Australian citizen or a permanent resident eligible for Australian citizenship.

I cannot obtain my school results as my schooling was undertaken - in another country / they are in another language / at a school, which has since closed. What should I do?

Each State education department has the authority to issue an equivalency certificate for educational courses undertaken in overseas countries. This process and any associated costs are the responsibility of the applicant.

I did my schooling overseas, and I have heard that I need to have it assessed to determine Australian equivalency prior to submission with an application. How do I arrange this?

All overseas qualifications submitted must be accompanied by an assessment of Australian equivalencies.
The Education Department of each state and territory in Australia individually assesses overseas academic qualifications. The contact details are as follows:

ACT, VIC, QLD, NSW, NT, SA, TAS, and WA

Australian Education International, through the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (AEI-NOOSR), provides official information and advice on the comparability of overseas higher education, post-secondary technical and vocational overseas qualifications with Australian qualifications.

Please be aware that AEI-NOOSR does not assess overseas qualifications for migration purposes.

I am a qualified tradesperson. Who do I contact to assess my qualifications for Australian equivalency?

Trade qualifications are the responsibility of Trades Recognition Australia (TRA).

I do not have a birth certificate as I was born in another country, but I have a passport. Will this do?

A Defence Recruiter can rely on other documents that support the identification of the applicant such as a passport or certificate of Australian citizenship.
