Sports and Recreation

It's not just organised physical training we're talking about. If you're into sport, you've come to the right place! Sport promotes teamwork and fitness, so not surprisingly it plays a big role in Navy life. And unlike in the civilian world where you often struggle to find the time to incorporate fitness into your life, we make it a part of your working day.

Dragon Boat racing

Dragon Boat racing is an ideal sport for the Navy as it develops strength, flexibility and endurance. Each paddler's contribution is essential so it also teaches the importance of teamwork. This sport pushes you to your limits and delivers great results for your fitness. The RAN Dragon Boat Team has competed in places like New Zealand, Malaysia, Hong Kong and China. They even set a world record in the 1300 metre title at the 1998 Championships in Gui Lin, China.

Qoute: The Navy's heavily involved with the Manly Surf Carnival, we like to help out at all of their events.

Surfboats

The Royal Australian Navy sponsors the Australian Surf Boat Rowers League (ASRL), a sporting group which, just like the Navy, encourages fit, healthy Australians and gives back to the community. A total of 24 surf boat racing events are held in every state over the summer, culminating in the Navy-ASRL Open Surf Boat Championship.

Facilities on base

Navy sporting facilities are world class and a significant feature of any base or shore establishment. Working in the Navy gives you access to football ovals, basketball and tennis courts, swimming pools and gyms equipped with state-of-the-art weights and cardio machines. When you're not on duty, you can make use of these fantastic facilities whenever you like.

Here are just a few examples of the Navy’s impressive sporting facilities:

The Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA)

ADFA has a highly impressive range of sporting facilities; you can find everything you need without stepping off the campus grounds. These include a state-of-the-art indoor sports centre, which houses squash courts, a gymnasium, weights room and swimming pool. Within the grounds of the Academy are around 23 hectares of sporting fields for cricket, football, netball, squash, tennis and many other sports. There is even an Academy Boatshed located on the shore of Lake Burley Griffin at Yarralumla, which houses rowing sculls and shells, sailing and racing dinghies, canoes and sailboards, along with two Endeavour 24 yachts moored permanently on the lake.

The Royal Australian Naval College (RANC)

The Royal Australian Naval College in Jervis Bay, NSW boasts a nine-hole golf course, four pristine tennis courts and a state-of-the-art gym with cross trainers, weight machines, treadmills and boxing stations. There's also an outdoor military circuit. 'Captain's Beach', a beautiful clear water beach with a volleyball net for summer nights, is just five minutes away and nearby Booderee National Park is home to some amazing bushwalking tracks.

Sports teams

When you're a part of the Navy you get the chance to represent your Service and your country at the highest sporting levels on the world stage.
