The Royal Australian Navy is currently recruiting Direct Entry Submariners (DESMs). Traditionally, the Submarine Service was only open to volunteers from within the Navy Fleet. Experienced sailors and officers both male and female could apply to transfer to the Submarine Service after they had completed their employment training and served an additional 12 months.
