The ADF Gap Year Navy Officer program provides young Australians who meet Officer Entry requirements an opportunity to broaden their life experience with only a one year commitment. The program offers a 'try before you buy' experience of Navy Officer training and lifestyle for young men and women, without any obligation to serve beyond the program period.
It is important to note that the program is designed to offer workplace experiences within various Navy career streams, not to provide training that qualifies the officer within their stream.
Navy’s fleet of advanced ships are critical to Navy’s capability. As a Navy Gap Year officer in the Electronics Engineer career stream, you will have the opportunity to be immersed in Navy’s engineering environment, working with people who tackle engineering challenges across a variety of electronics systems. You will experience what it takes to maintain a ship’s communication, radar, sonar, navigation and combat management systems. You could be involved in monitoring system performance and developing repair schemes. Shadowing experienced Electronics Engineers, you will also learn about their duties, such as overseeing teams of technicians who ensure the fleet is expertly maintained and ready for service, coordinating and scheduling personnel and tasks, and keeping Officer of the Day duties.

As a Navy Gap Year officer you will receive an attractive salary during the program and benefit from standard ADF employment entitlements such as free medical and dental care, subsidised accommodation and meals and employment allowances. Starting salary for Gap Year officers is from $32,000 per annum plus allowances and superannuation.
You will be supported throughout your training by professional and enthusiastic Navy personnel who will provide the guidance necessary for you to achieve your goals. This will begin at the Royal Australian Naval College (RANC), HMAS Creswell where you will be required to complete a nine week course (common to Navy Officer appointees) prior to continuing with the program. RANC is an invigorating environment where you will be challenged to meet Navy standards of fitness, demeanour and behaviour.
As a Navy Gap Year officer you will have experiences and develop skills that will benefit you in your career and personal life long after you graduate. Your Gap Year will be broken up into different stages. This will give you the opportunity to receive basic training and to tour Navy's different bases. You will experience life at sea, as well as what it is like to be employed ashore in Navy Officer roles. As a Navy Gap Year officer you will be provided with the opportunity to contribute to the operation of the ship or unit.

Salary & Allowances
In the Navy you'll get paid a good salary from day one regardless of your age, experience or qualifications; and your pay increases as you progress through training.
In addition to base pay you'll receive a variety of allowances - which are detailed below - plus superannuation at a far higher rate than you're likely to find in the civilian world.
The Initial Entry Officer Course is conducted at HMAS Creswell in Jervis Bay on the South Coast of NSW.
The Shore Establishment tour may include visits to:
- Fleet Base East, HMAS Penguin, HMAS Watson and HMAS Waterhen in Sydney
- HMAS Albatross and HMAS Creswell at Nowra
- Fleet Base West in Western Australia at HMAS Stirling
Assignment to Sea Deployment and Shore Employment at Establishments could be in a range of locations around Australia.
You must be aged between 18-24 years old by completion of military training; exact dates are dependent on each intake. July 2019 intake must be 18 by 20 September 2019. January 2020 intake must be 18 by the end of March 2020.
Education & Experience
For the July 2019 Officer Entry Gap Gear intake, you must have completed Year 12 level of secondary education (or equivalent) to Officer Entry standard with passes in English and three other tertiary accredited subjects. If you have applied for a degree or are undertaking a degree in a relevant field to your preferred role but have deferred, or you have a high ATAR, you may have a competitive advantage.
From the January 2020 intake, as a minimum you will need to have completed Year 12 to Officer Entry standard and achieved an ATAR which would qualify you for entry into a relevant degree at UNSW/ADFA that is aligned to an Electrical Engineering pathway. Applications can be considered if you are yet to complete Year 12 and are tracking towards the required ATAR.
Current or former serving military personnel (ADF or foreign service) are not eligible for Gap Year.
Medical & Fitness
To be appointed, you must be medically and physically fit for entry to your chosen occupation. This is partially assessed from the completion of an extensive questionnaire covering your medical history, followed by a physical examination.
You will also be required to pass a physical fitness test before enlistment or appointment. For further details on medical and physical fitness standards refer to Physical Fitness Standards for Entry into the ADF and Medical Process for Entry into the ADF.
Period of Service
There are two intakes per year, one in January and one in July. The program duration is between 11 and 12 months. In 2019, the second intake commences on 19 July and is expected to conclude on 3 July 2020. The first intake in 2020 will commence training in January and conclude in December.
This program may present opportunities within Navy as a permanent member, depending on capability requirements and available vacancies, or you can choose to leave the ADF.
The application process to join the Australian Defence Force requires you to complete a series of aptitude tests which may include verbal, spatial and numerical ability and a general maths test. Some jobs may also require you to complete additional testing at a later date.
Psychology support staff will explain what is involved with each test.

Only Australian Citizens are permitted to serve in the Navy Gap Year Officer program.
The Department of Defence requires ADF entrants to attain a security clearance appropriate to their avenue of entry.
The security clearance is critical to an applicant’s successful progression through to Navy employment and training. It is strongly recommended that all applicants provide the required documents as early as possible in the recruiting process to avoid any delays in their training and employment.

Navy Gap Year participants will complete an Officer entry course of between 9 and 22 weeks at the Royal Australian Naval College, HMAS Creswell, situated at Jervis Bay, NSW, about 195 kilometres south of Sydney.
